Handling dental issues is never easy, especially when they occur unexpectedly in the middle of the night, during a meeting, or during a vacation. Fortunately, one of the advantages of a dentistry that provides emergency dental services is the immediate treatment of injury and disease, as well as the elimination of discomfort. At Grace Dental, we are glad to provide the care you or a loved one requires to overcome this obstacle.

When Is an Oral Problem Considered an Emergency?

Any trauma to the mouth that results in cuts in the gums and soft tissues, bleeding, a cracked tooth, or a knocked-out tooth is considered an oral emergency. Broken braces, dental bridges, or other dental restorations or appliances that cause pain and oral injuries can also be considered a dental emergency.

Causes of Dental Emergencies

The majority of dental emergencies are the result of an accident such as a car collision. Another cause of dental emergencies is participation in contact sports, which frequently results in fractured or knocked-out teeth. Tripping or falling that results in fractured teeth and gum damage is also a dental emergency. Eating hard foods and poor oral hygiene can result in unexpected damage to teeth that qualifies as a dental emergency.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Knocked-Out Tooth
A tooth gets accidentally knocked out because of a car accident or a sporting accident. When your mouth suffers trauma from being struck by something hard, the force could knock your tooth out. If you accidentally knock out a tooth, pick it up gently from the top and avoid touching the roots or bottom of the tooth. Reinsert the tooth back in its socket if possible, or store it in a glass of salt water or cold milk. Bring the tooth when you see our dentist to have your injury treated. If you do so within 30 minutes of the tooth getting knocked out, we may be able to reinsert and restore it.
  • Chipped Tooth
A chipped tooth is a common dental emergency. Food can produce little chips; however, it is usually an injury or accident that causes a bigger chip. While it may be embarrassing to be seen with a chipped front tooth, of greater concern is the discomfort it produces while chewing and the chance that it could lead to worse damage. Thankfully, chips can be readily repaired with a crown, bond, or veneer. If you chip your tooth, keep the chipped portion and see us as soon as possible.
  • Bleeding
Profuse or severe bleeding in the gums might require emergency dental care. Patients who have suffered cuts in their mouths as a result of eating particular foods or being in an accident should see an emergency dentist as soon as feasible. Gingivitis patients may experience symptoms such as excessive gum bleeding and pain. If you experience bleeding, apply pressure on the bleeding area with a clean gauze or piece of cloth to reduce or stop the bleeding until you see us.
